Karen Walker has been working with the The United Nations’ ITC Ethical Fashion Initiative since 2012.
This season the EFI's artisans have created two stunning beach totes and a clutch purse featuring Karen’s signature love of colour and whimsical iconography. The bags are handcrafted in Kenya and embellished with traditional beadwork by women of the Samburu and Maasai tribes.
The Ethical Fashion Initiative creates work in community groups of micro-artisans located in urban slums and disadvantaged rural areas of Africa. Using fashion to reduce poverty, The Ethical Fashion Initiative’s motto is NOT CHARITY, JUST WORK and its task is to promote sustainable business over aid dependency, whilst measuring the social impact, sustainability and traceability of fashion goods. The EFI enables marginalized artisans to increase their skills, to enter the international fashion chain in a fair way and to produce directly for brands that distribute products worldwide. This work gives the women and men in these local communities a regular wage and the means to improve living conditions for their families and communities.
